「インディ・ジョーンズ」シリーズの記念すべき第1作で、「スター・ウォーズ」のジョージ・ルーカスと「ジョーズ」「未知との遭遇」のスティーブン・スピルバーグが初タッグを組み、1981年に製作した冒険活劇。主演ハリソン・フォードの代表作のひとつとして広く知られ、以降もシリーズ作品が大ヒットを重ねた映画史に残る名作アクションアドベンチャー。第2次世界大戦前夜の1936年を舞台に、旧約聖書に記されている十戒が刻まれた石板が収められ、神秘の力を宿しているという契約の箱(=聖櫃)を巡って、ナチスドイツとアメリカの考古学者インディ・ジョーンズ(ハリソン・フォード)が争奪戦を展開する。原案はルーカスとフィリップ・カウフマン。脚本は「スター・ウォーズ 帝国の逆襲」のローレンス・カスダン。
